Anti-Wrinkle Injections

Expression lines - such as crow's feet and forehead wrinkles - are formed when the muscles in our face repeatedly contract, causing the skin to crease. These lines can be effectively treated with injectable muscle relaxants, which contain a purified protein derived from bacteria. When injected in small amounts into targeted muscles, this protein temporarily inhibits the muscle movements that lead to the formation of these lines, providing a smoother, more relaxed appearance.

Anti-wrinkle injections work by relaxing the muscles responsible for creating lines and wrinkles. They temporarily block the communication between nerves and muscles, reducing their ability to contract.

The active ingredient in the injections are produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. When extracts are injected into certain types of muscle, the signalling system between the nerve and muscle becomes inactivated for several month. It has many medical applications and has been used for several decades for uncontrolled spasms of the muscles (dystonia) including the eyelids (blepharospasm). It is also used to treat hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), bruxism (teeth grinding) and certain types of headache.

Where Can Anti-Wrinkle Injections Be Used?

Anti-wrinkle injections are versatile and can address various concerns on the face and neck. Common treatment areas include forehead lines, crow’s feet, lip lines, eyebrow drooping and upper eyelid hooding. They can also help reduce neck vertical (platysmal) bands, chin dimpling, and drooping of the nose tip.

How Long Do Results Last?

The effects of anti-wrinkle injections typically last 3–4 months, with full results appearing within ten days. Initial treatments are carried out with conservative doses to minimise the risk of overcorrection. You will be offered a review appointment two weeks after the injections to assess the result and adjust, if required. There is no additional fee for this appointment but please note, inclusive top-up injections are not available
after 3 weeks of treatment. Most patients will receive treatment 3-4 times per year to maintain the beneficial effect.

Possible Side Effects

Side effects are generally minimal. You may experience mild bruising, slight swelling, or a pinprick mark at the injection site for a day or so. Occasionally, there might be a mild dull ache in the treated area for 1–2 days. Localized discoloration is rare but possible, and any discomfort usually resolves quickly.
