What's The Fuss About Serums?

Updated: Aug 6, 2023

OK, so you're a dab hand when it comes to your moisturiser and cleansers, but what about serums? And, more importantly, are you including one in your daily skincare routine?

WHAT IS A SERUM?

A serum is a lightweight skincare product that contains a higher concentration of active ingredients (for example, hyaluronic or glycolic acid). They deliver a potent shot of ingredients directly into your skin and should be applied to your face and neck after cleansing and before you moisturise. Unlike traditional face creams, they have smaller molecules which means they can penetrate the epidermis more effectively.

HOW DO I USE A SERUM?

Due to their high concentration, you only need a small amount and you’ll find a few drops go a long way - great if you're looking at making your budget stretch. Because of the active ingredients, you can choose one to target specific skincare issues directly, whether that's ageing, redness, dryness or sensitivity.

If you suffer from oily skin, you may be concerned about adding extra oil. However, our skin tends to produce excess oil when its overcompensating for dryness; so adding a serum to your routine actually helps it hydrate. If you have a dry complexion, chose one with hyaluronic acid, while breakouts can be targeted with one that contains salicylic acid.

You can layer your serums if you have a few issues you want to tackle, providing a multitude of benefits in one application. Not only that, you can also add a drop or two to your regular moisturiser or foundation to supercharge them. In fact, your face cream helps create a barrier on top of the serum to keep all the skin-boosting ingredients in.
